Big Box Delight

There are so many things that I plan to post about and just never get around to doing. One of those posts is how Bill and I spent our Valentine's Day this year — at Sears. I know, romantic. But what WAS fun about buying a washing machine that day was seeing Gwendolyn experience a big store for the first time. Gwendolyn has never been to big box stores — no indoor mall (Santa Barbara doesn't have them), no Costco, no Target. I know, I know, shock and horror…she's a completely deprived child. Part of it is Santa Barbara doesn't have that many big chain stores and another part is germs. So Sears (yes, they still exist) was her first foray into the bright lights, shelves stacked high, item displays galore. And you would have thought it was Disneyland. She analyzed every lawnmower, BBQ, and appliance — so curious. Her eyes were as big as saucers and she kept looking at us with an expression that said, “What is this magical place?”

So this weekend we headed out to good old Sears again — this time for a new mattress — and Gwendolyn was once again the world's most patient toddler. And dare I say, she loved it! And she is such a big helper — giving us her opinion and holding purchases. (Some day I plan to unveil the wonders of Target — if only Santa Barbara would build one!)
