Little Miss Sunshine has a new form of rebellion. All toddlers get frustrated, even ones who can't throw a kicking and screaming fit. And especially ones who skip a nap. And our little darling has now learned that by holding her breath and turning white/grey she quickly gets our attention. Yes, you read that right, she purposefully holds her breath just so she can scare the pants off me.
The poor ladies at See's candy aren't known for speed, but that usually never bothers me. I rather like passing pleasantries in a non-rushed way. Since it is almost Easter, See's was a tad more crowded than I'd expected — mistake #1. But, certainly three people in front of us won't take that long, right? — mistake #2. Gwendolyn started getting restless and I started getting antsy knowing my time was growing dangerously short, but we were so close, so very, very close — mistake #3. Finally, our turn, credit card handed over, and the lady decided to pass out candies to the entire store right at the point when Gwendolyn had clearly had E-nough! I'm-so-mad-at-you-Mommy-I'm-holding-my-breath phase, not making a peep, the old woman at See's had no idea why I suddenly demanded, “I need to go.” She needed to copy down some numbers, she couldn't find a pen… I swear she slowed down just to teach me not to be in such a rush. Meanwhile Gwendolyn is now completely white. But the second I opened the door and hurriedly pushed her to a spot to reposition her and deep suction her, she was fine. She needed the suctioning, but almost just to force her to stop holding her breath. And really what she wanted was out of the store and to get moving. Little stinker.
