Petrified National Forest and the Painted Desert

Yesterday, on our beautiful trek from Sedona, AZ to Santa Fe, NM we decided last minute to take a detour through the Petrified Forest National Park and the Painted Desert. The petrified wood was interesting – especially when you consider that they are a few HUNDRED MILLION years old. They look exactly like wood logs, but are hard with crystals in it. And the Painted Desert backdrop was absolutely breathtaking – the sky even cooperated down to the puffy white clouds to top it off.

Petrified wood. It is what it is.

Gwendolyn insisted on wearing Daddy's polarized shades to truly take in all of the colors of the Painted Desert.

The “rig” with the Big Sky…

Due to a little bit of a late start, our fun last minute detour, some stormy weather through NM, and an hour time change (oops, forgot to take that into consideration), we arrived in Santa Fe, NM pretty late and we're a bit on the tired side this morning. To top it off, we were watching Gwendolyn pretty closely as her O2 stats started getting pretty low yesterday (lower to mid 90's). We considered turning around and going back towards Albuquerque, the nearest PICU, and we put her on a small amount of oxygen last night, but her stats stabilized and they are much more normal this morning. Nevertheless, we'll be keeping her on her pulsox while we are here for the day, will be giving her extra water, and will be keeping a close eye on her.

Well, off to explore Santa Fe, NM!
