Gwendolyn has therapy every day — on some days twice. The therapy ranges from stretching to play and sometimes a combination of the two, but all of it allows Gwendolyn to experience things she could not without the help of some very special people.
Therapy for SMA children is a challenge. It's not rehabilitation — the disease is terminal. It's not strength training — the disease is degenerative. But therapy is invaluable for Gwendolyn…on so many levels. Therapy helps keep her muscles loose to prevent them from contracting which causes enormous pain. It has allowed her an opportunity to experience movement in a way she can't without assistance. It has provided equipment that allows her to interact in the world in a new way. It's a chance to be challenged in a way that she just won't agree to with mom and dad. And, for us, one of the most important things therapy and her amazing therapists have provided is a time for Gwendolyn to interact and have a special relationship with someone other than her parents. And Gwendolyn values that time so immensely.
She adores her therapists — adores. She has a different relationship with each of them. And often times I am told to leave the room (literally, she tells me to get out!). They completely understand her subtle cues and unique forms of communication. They are so creative with things to help stimulate her physically and mentally. And they have a wonderful respect and acceptance of who our little girl has become. We feel so very fortunate to have such a sensitive and thoughtful group of people helping us make Gwendolyn's life more full and we know she feels lucky to have them.
We are beyond grateful for you and your help M, K, C, J, and C!
Here is a video from two Mondays ago. She has two therapy sessions that day and really had a fun day.
