[it takes less than a minute]A great “friend in the fight”, the inspiring Don C. Reed and his equally inspiring son, Roman Reed, are on the front-lines battling once again in California to save funding for spinal cord injury research — which, in turn, can benefit spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) research. Don and Roman have been big supporters of our efforts through the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation for the past few years and have had a bigger impact on spinal cord injury research than anyone else on this planet. Their efforts are tireless and their results are jaw dropping. In 1999, theywere monumental in getting the Roman Reed Spinal Cord Injury Research Act passed in California and this law, “Romans Law”, has had a massive impact on spinal cord injury research over the last 10+ years and has had a positive impact on research of SMA.
Unfortunately, as a result of the current financial crisis and other factors, the funding for this extremely efficient and effective law has been cut off. But the door has been left open to find “other” sources of funding. And leave it to Don, Roman, and friends to fight and fight and fight and find another way. In conjunction withAssemblyman Bob Wieckowski, D-Fremont, they have come up with an extremely creative way to restore the funding for the Roman Reed Spinal Cord Injury Research Fund — without — adding — or — taking — a — single — penny — from — taxpayers.
Enter the proposed AB 190:
AB 190…will impose a $3 additional penalty on all moving traffic violations and dedicate the revenue to the Roman Reed Spinal Cord Injury Research Fund, which is operated by the University of California.
No good driver will be affected; no taxpayer will lose one cent.
Who benefits? Everyone.
A paralyzed person may face medical costs in the millions of dollars. Since most of us don't have such money, that means government assistance, which means taxes.
Anyone who hates taxes should support research to cure chronic disease and disability — and here is a way to pay for it — without costing taxpayers a penny.
